Major Scale - Students will sing a major scale (can be on solfege, neutral syllables, etc.).

Prepared Song Excerpt – Students will prepare a portion of Felix Mendelssohn’s “Richte Mich Gott”. Practice tracks will be available on the auditions tab of the Northwest High School website (posted above). Students will perform the excerpt unaccompanied at their audition.

Sight Reading – Students will sight sing a 5 measure excerpt. This sight reading excerpt will contain one to two chromatic moments and will begin on either Do or Sol. This component is intended to determine reading ability level, not to frustrate students. Students are encouraged to use the tools that will make them most successful, ie Solfege, Neutral Syllables. Students will be evaluated on both pitch accuracy and rhythmic accuracy.

Tonal Memory – Students will be played a series of pitches and be asked to sing them back on a neutral syllable (La).

Voice Check – (possible) If there are any questions about a student’s voice part or any aspect of the singing audition, a range test will be done. This would be very similar to a vocal warm up during a choir period, and will not be done in every audition. This is not a scored element of the audition.
